Closet Consumption: Sunday 26th August, 2012

Studio day!!!

Usual uniform of:

  • Jeans by GAP
  • hoodie by Threadless
  • Birkenstocks
  • t-shirt by Marimekko...

It's all a little something like this...

I'm on some major deadlines for an exhibition so I have been in the studio most of the time on the weekends.  No make-up, just coffee and hard work!

Closet Consumption: Saturday 25th August, 2012

Saturday 25 August 2012

Wearing:

  • leggings by 2XU (sports leggings) $100AUD
  • striped oversized tee by Marimekko, purchased on sale a couple of months ago for $50USD
  • Jacket by the GAP, purchased on sale in October 2009.
  • VANS sneakers, purchased in February 2012, $40USD
  • Scarf by OBEY, purchased at Urban Outfitters in August 2010, $30USD

Was a bit of a run around doing chores day today.  Needed something comfortable, was doing quite a bit of walking too, hence my gym tights!

The leggings by 2XU are expensive but in my experience have worn well and fit extremely well.  I practically live in these when I go travelling.

Items Made to Be Replaced...

Closet Consumption: Friday 24 August, 2012.

Friday

Wearing:

  • Dress by Marimekko, purchased in the last 2 weeks for $150USD
  • Stockings from local drug store, purchased yesterday fro $11AUD
  • Vans sneakers, purchased in February 2012, $40USD.
  • Coat by Tahari, purchased in 2009 (?) for $150USD
  • wooden necklace by ELK, purchased last week for $40AUD
  • Bag by Marimekko, purchased in February 2012 for $240USD
  • Cowl, handknitted by me!

I think that I have worn this dress about 5 times in the last 2 weeks. Maybe it is partially the novelty of having something new to wear and wanting to wear it all the time but I think it is also about that the dress is comfortable, it is made from cotton, it doesn't crease and I don't really need to iron it.

It also gets lots of comments!  Which is always nice!

Closet Consumption: Thursday 23 August, 2012

Thursday

Wearing:

  • dress by Marimekko, purchased last year?
  • stockings from local drug store
  • VANS sneakers, purchased in February 2012, $40USD
  • Jacket from NIQUE purchased last winter
  • Bag from Marimekko, purchased in February for approximately $240USD

Comfortable outfit for work.  I think that my stockings are about to die on me though, they've gotten to the point where they keep falling down.

Purchase:  I bought new stockings from the local drug store today for $11AUD.

Closet Consumption: Wednesday 22 August, 2012.

Wednesday

Wearing:
  • dress by Marimekko, purchased in August 2010 on sale.
  • cardigan by Uniqlo, purchased in NYC in March for approximately $20USD
  • stockings from Sussans, $12AUD
  • shoes, Dianna Ferrari, purchased about 18 months ago for $50AUD
  • brooch by local artist Gemma Jones, $15AUD
  • Bag by Marimekko, purchased in February 2012 for approximately $240USD

I think that these shoes will be going to charity.  I've worn them a few times but I've realised how uncomfortable they are!  This really should stop me from buying 'cheaply' made shoes.

Closet Consumption: Tuesday 21st August, 2012

It was a Prada glasses day, even a chair salesman complimented my outfit today!

Wearing:

  • striped dress by Marimekko, purchased this month
  • necklace from H&M, purchased in March 2012 for approximately $9USD.
  • bag by Marimekko, purchased in February on sale.
  • stockings from local drug store
  • hand made clogs by Ugglebo Sweden, purchased in March, 2012.
  • Jacket by Nique, purchased last Winter (2011)

Not much to report on these items.

Closet Consumption: Monday 20th August, 2012

Monday

Wearing:

  • organic cotton dress by Marimekko, purchased in August 2011
  • wool cardigan by GAP, purchased in February 2012
  • stockings from local drugstore
  • hand knitted cowl, made by me
  • handmade shoes by local artisan
  • Jacket by NIQUE
  • bag from Marimekko, usual yellow one that I use everyday.

Notes:
All of these items have worn pretty well.  My shoes have been resoled twice, however they are starting to look a little ratty now.  They have a pointy toe which gets a bit scuffed when wearing them.  In saying that, they have been worn ALOT!!

Sunday, 19 August 2012

Closet Consumption: Sunday 19 August, 2012

Studio day today so I was wearing what was was clean and comfortable today.

Wearing:

  • jeans by GAP
  • long sleeve t-shirt by Jeans West
  • VANS sneakers
  • hoodie by Threadless

This again, was very similar to what I wore last Sunday when I was in the studio.  Is there items that you always wear on the weekend when you are 'relaxing'?

Closet Consumption: Saturday 18 August, 2012

Wearing:

  • leggings by H&M
  • denim tunic by GAP
  • VANS sneakers
  • Marimekko bag.

Notes:
Yeah, I was a bit hung over today and after a shower, I had to venture out to the supermarket and for a few chores.  I reached for what I didn't need to iron and what was comfortable and quick to put on.  As you can see, I wore this last Saturday as well!  Obviously this is becoming my weekend uniform.

Closet Consumption: Friday 17 August, 2012

Friday

Wearing:
  • Dress by Marimekko, purchased this month.
  • Necklace by local Melbourne designer, purchased approximately 2 years ago on sale for about $80AUD
  • Coat by Marimekko, purchased in March 2011 on sale.
  • Bag by Marimekko, my usual yellow everyday one.
  • stockings from local drugstore
  • shoes, handmade by local artisan.

Notes:
Not much to say other than I did wear this dress this week already.  Pretty much everything I was wearing from from the Finnish design company Marimekko, other than local artisan products.

Thursday, 16 August 2012

Closet Consumption: Thursday 16th August, 2012

Wearing:

  • dress by Marimekko (shock horror, I wore it yesterday!)
  • tights from local drugstore
  • Ugglebo clogs, hand made in Sweden, $160USD purchased in March 2012.
  • Jacket from Nique, purchased last Winter
  • grey cowl, handknitted by me!
  • Yellow Marimekko bag, my usual everyday bag...

Notes:
Sometimes I get a little lazy with what I am going to wear.  Yep, I wore the same dress twice in a row.  I don't wash my dresses after every wear either, only if they look dirty and smell.  In reality this is probably what makes them last longer.

Closet Consumption: Wednesday 16th August, 2012

Orange marimekko

Wearing today:
  • Dress by marimekko, purchased this month for $150USD
  • Shoes handmade by local bootmaker.
  • Stocking from drugstore
  • Jacket from Nique
  • Cowl handknitted by me
  • Bag by marimekko

Shopping: was out and bought a wooden necklace by ELK for $40AUD. They are a lovely Australian company!  The orange dress from Marimekko is made in Finland and is like their t-shirts.  It has received quite a few comments!

Closet Consumption: Tuesday 14 August, 2012

New #marimekko... They are like tiny pills...

 Wearing:
  • new Marimekko dress (arrived yesterday), made from jersey. Cost $149USD.
  • Black tights from drugstore
  • aqua Ugglebo clogs, handmade for me, cost $160USD
  • necklace from local artisan, purchased in Bendigo for $35AUD
  • Black cardigan from Uniqlo
  • grey handknitted cowl
  • thick cotton jacket from NIQUE, purchase for $160AUD last winter.
This new dress is super comfortable!!  Will be interesting to see how it holds up in the wear and tear factor as it is a bit thinner than most of the Marimekko dresses I own but with their track record, I'm sure it will be fine.

Monday, 13 August 2012

Closet Consumption: Monday 13 August, 2012

Monday

Wearing:
  • Marimekko dress with hares on it.
  • Yellow Marimekko bag - used most days.
  • black tights from drugstore
  • black Uniqlo cardigan
  • hand made shoes from local artisan, cost $160AUD purchased in January 2010
  • grey handknitted cowl
Was back at work today, the weather was all over the place!  It was super cold in the morning and then became super warm!  I was moving some artworks around and this Marimekko dress lends itself to being a bit active as it's kinda stretchy.

I wonder how many times I have worn this dress in the last month?  I would say 5 to 6 times?  At least once a week....

SHOPPING:
My Marimekko order arrived today!  Very excited!

Closet Consumption: Sunday 12 August, 2012

Studio Sunday

Wearing:

  • GAP jeans
  • Obey tshirt
  • hoodie from Threadless
  • VANS sneakers

(details of when items were purchased and cost can be found here.)

Was working in the studio today.  I think I managed to get up, get showered and start work by 9am.  I pretty much threw on what ever was around, was comfortable and warm.

It's funny because I remember when I worked in a studio at University I cared a bit more about what I wore.  Now when I go to the studio, I'm in my own zone and I really don't care how I look!

Closet Consumption: Saturday 11 August, 2012

Sunday closet consumption

Wearing:

  • GAP denim tunic
  • H&M tights
  • VANS sneakers

I don't think I really even left the house today, was doing house work, watching movies.  As you can see this denim tunic has become a bit of a weekend favourite. I posted here about it too!

I wonder how other people view clothes for the weekends?

Closet Consumption: Friday 10 August, 2012.

Friday

Wearing:
  • black Marimekko Dress, purchased in March 2011 for approximately $140USD
  • black Uniqlo cardigan, purchased in February 2012 for $20USD
  • tights from Sussans bought on sale a couple of months ago for $10AUD
  • Van's sneakers purchased in February 2012 for $40USD
  • green knitted cowl, knitted by me.
  • Black Tahari Jacket purchased in 2009.

Fridays are kinda a casual Friday theme at work, this outfit is a bit schleppy, comfortable to be sitting at the computer.

Purchases... August 2012.

I'm a bit of a sucker when the new collection of Marimekko comes out.  I had held off for quite a few weeks as the new styles and colours starting trickling in.  But then I couldn't wait any longer.  I wanted to make sure that I got the dresses that I wanted before they sold out!

Above is the screen shot of my order.  It has been posted and is on it's way from Finland, via New York...

Closet Consumption: Thursday 9 August, 2012

Monday

Wearing today:
  • Hare Dress by Marimekko. Purchased in store at upper east side store in November 2009 for approximately $150USD.
  • Stockings. Purchased online from Urban Outfitters for $10USD about 2 months ago.
  • Handmade shoes, purchased for $160AUD.
  • Cardigan by the GAP, purchased in store for $60USD.
  • Cowl, hand knitted by Me!
  • Bag by Marimekko. Purchased in store in February 2012 on sale for approximately $60USD.

Usage notes:
Dress:  I have worn this dress loads, I throw it in the washing machine and it often doesn't need ironing.  It's been quite consistent in the wardrobe! It is also fully made in Finland.

Bag:  since purchase, it has been used most days.

Cardigan:  worn approximately 1-2 times a week.  No pilling and has worn well so far.

This has become a bit of a uniform for me in the office when I don't have any particular meetings on and it's pretty cold!  You can tell, considering I wore practically the same thing on Monday 30 July!

Closet Consumption: Wednesday 8 August, 2012

Wearing today:

  • jeans by the GAP, purchased in February 2012 for approx. $60USD
  • long sleeve t-shirt from Jeans West, purchased about 2 years ago for $19AUD.
  • hooded sweatshirt from Threadless, purchased in October 2009 online for $40USD.
  • Vans sneakers, purchased in February 2012 for $40USD
  • down puffer vest by the GAP, purchased on sale in November 2009 for approximately $40USD.
I had the day off today and was working in the studio.  It was super cold so I needed to be comfortable and warm, hence the multiple layers!

All of the items that I was wearing are pretty much what I wear to slouch around the house or studio.  It's funny that they are all quite 'cheap' clothing that I've had for quite some time but I don't mind wearing 'cheap' clothing to wear in the studio, it becomes more about comfort and warmth than it does about how long it will last or how good it looks.

Closet Consumption: Tuesday 7 August, 2012.

Closet consumption

Wearing today:

  • dress by Marimekko, purchased on sale in February 2012 in NYC for approximately $100USD.
  • stockings from local drug store.
  • artistan made shoes, purchased for $160AUD, made in approximately January 2009?
  • Jacket from Marimekko, purchased in March 2010, on sale.

Usage notes:
This dress is a bit of a go to now when I need to wear something great for work, for an exhibition opening, interviews etc.  It always gets great comments.  What I love about it is that it is made from a beautiful cotton fabric that looks a little extravagant but I still pop it in the washing machine to clean!

  What I am wearing:
  • Dress, made by me, fabric from Ikea.  Dress made approximately 3 years ago.
  • stockings from drug store
  • Hand made Swedish Clogs, purchased in April 2012 for $160 USD.
  • Jacket by Tahari, purchased in 2009 for approximately $100USD.
  • Bag by Marimekko, same yellow bag I use everyday!
Usage notes:
I hadn't worn this dress for awhile, it's been hanging in the wardrobe but it is a comfortable dress.  The fabric from Ikea has washed up well and the stripes are woven into the cotton.  It will stick around in the wardrobe for a while longer!

Questions:
When do you get rid of something from your wardrobe.  I think when something doesn't fit, that makes it easy but what about an item that is well made and is lasting for ages?  Do you send something to charity when you don't like it anymore?  When it is out of fashion?

These questions may need some more thought...

GAP denim tunic

 Wearing today:
  • Leggings, gift from my mum
  • GAP denim tunic, purchased for $60USD in August 2010
  • Black birkenstock clogs, purchased for approximately $140AUD. Can't remember when I bought these, probably back in 2001!!!
  • Cowl, handknitted by me!

Slouchy weekend wear. I went to have a massage so I needed something comfortable for afterwards. This denim tunic has served me well, no buttons have fallen off and the denim appears to be quite good quality. I looked at the tag today and it is made in India.

Closet Consumption: Saturday 4th August, 2012

Today was a bit of a lazy day of chores and then seeing a film with friends.  It was all about being comfortable.

Wearing today:

  • Leggings from H&M
  • Striped oversized tee from Marimekko
  • Vans sneakers
  • GAP jacket
  • handknitted cowl.

Pretty much my weird uniform for slouching around that I wore last weekend in the studio.  You can see what it all looked like in last week's post over here!

Weekend dressing is pretty much about comfort for me.  Often I don't even wear make up.  I've gotten to the point in my life that weekends are my time off from work and everything else and my outfits reflect this.

I don't even go shopping on the weekends as something to do.  This definitely is reflected in what I wear!

Closet Consumption: Friday 3 August, 2012

Dress

Wearing today:

  • dress by Marimekko, purchased in store in NYC in March, 2011.  Cost approximately $120USD
  • cardigan by Uniqlo, purchased in February 2012, cost $20USD
  • stockings from local drug store
  • Vans Sneakers, purchased in store in February 2012 for approximately $40USD.
  • Necklace by local artisan, purchased in July 2012 for $35AUD
  • Bag by Marimekko
Usage notes:
I feel like I haven't been mixing up my outfits very much!  Friday is often a casual dress day at work, one of the reasons why I wore sneakers with my dress!

Everything has been wearing well.  The dress is a basic black dress that has been worn quite a bit however after many washes, it is starting to fade a bit and I wouldn't wear it now out for a fancy event.

I did get changed latter on to go out for the evening but wore the same sneakers.

Thursday, 2 August 2012

Closet Consumption: Thursday 2 August, 2012

Wearing today:

Pretty much I am wearing the same thing as I started off wearing on Tuesday.  Does that sound slack?  Maybe!  I had a conference to go to and I knew that I would be sitting around for most of the day so I needed something comfortable but that also looked pretty work appropriate.

You can see the details of what I was wearing in Tuesday's post over here.

It does make me think about how often we wear things and also how we feel about wearing things (or being seen in clothing) more than once.  Obviously many of my items are iconic and noticeable.  They aren't the average black dress that you may not be able to tell if it has been worn constantly.  I don't have a problem with wearing my dresses over and over.  They feel like an old friend that I keep visiting.

Potentially celebrities ideas of not being seen in the same thing more than once has had a roll on effect in the way us as consumers buy.  This is what may of lead to the ideas of disposable fashion.

I'm sure that this will come up over and over again...

Closet Consumption: Wednesday 1st August, 2012.

Wednesday

What I am wearing:

  • Dress by Marimekko, purchased on sale in August 2010 in store in NYC for approximately $80USD
  • Cardigan by Uniqlo: purchased in store for about $20USD in February 2012.
  • Stockings from local drug store, $9AUD.
  • Shoes made by local artisan, purchased in January 2010 for $160AUD.
  • necklace by local artisan, purchased in July 2012, $35AUD
  • Jacket by Tahari, purchased in 2009
  • Cowl, handmade by me!
Usage notes:
Dress:  this is a Summer dress that I like to wear in Winter as well, stretchy jersey and very comfortable.  I probably wear it as a Winter dress more than a Summer one!

General:  most of the items that I am wearing today have been worn quite consistently over the last few months.  Nothing seems to be wearing out in particular and I have been washing in my washing machine.

Other than my necklace and shoes, that have been made in Australia, my dress and bag have been made in Finland, everything else is China made.  Oops!  Forgot my yellow cowl which I made myself!

So:
China - 3 items
Finland - 2 items
Australia - 3 items... not too bad!

Closet Consumption: Tuesday 31 July, 3012

Dress
Dress one!

What I am wearing:
  • Marimekko dress, made in Portugal, purchased on line in August 2011 for approximately $150USD.
  • Black stockings, purchased from local drugstore for approximately $9AUD
  • Handmade shoes by local artisan, $160AUD, purchased in January 2010.
  • Black Tahari coat, bought in late 2009 on sale.
Mamas
at the exhibition

I had an exhibition opening in the evening so I changed to:
  • Marimekko dress, purchased in in early 2011 for approximately $250USD.
  • I wore the same shoes and stockings and coat.
Usage notes:
Dress:  both dresses get a lot of comments!  They have been worn quite a bit.
